It’s an old Finnish saying that opposites make a whole. In this case the familiar and the unknown. Or old and new.

In Finland everybody knows Suvivirsi (literally Summer Hymn) — it is at least 400 years old, propably much older — because we all have sung it at the end of semester in school or even in kindergarden. Now avant-guitarist Heikki Ruokangas and the adventure-minded drummer Simo Laihonen take the old hymn to a completely new place, while never losing its soul. The much-loved and familiar theme comes to surface time and time again on this journey that starts in slow meditation, but gears up gradually to almost noise. Between those ends it checks out a couple of other alternatives, too. For instance, here and there glimmers a drop of the blues.

It’s remarkable that while the duo’s interpretation is anything but conventional, it doesn’t make the mistake of being peculiar for peculiarity’s sake. The music dances skillfully on the energy between the poles and the tension sparkles to the very end. In fact, it grows on the way, as good drama does.
